History of Voodoo in America
Voodoo was introduced to American slaves by haitian and Caribbean slaves who were sold to American slave owners. Because these slave owners were Protestants they didn't understand any aspect of Voodoo and strictly forbidden it. As a result the type of Voodoo practiced in America today is different than haitian Voodoo. It is often called American Hoodoo or black and white magic.
Voodoo in America Today
Voodoo has continued to be practiced widely in America since Marie Laveau's death. It has been reported that in the last 10 years, American Voodoo practices have grown rapidly. The reports from people claiming to have been placed under Voodoo spells, hexes, etc. has more than tripled in the past 2 years!
Basic Voodoo Philosophy
Voodooist see themselves as part of the universe, just as the animals, trees and sky. We are put on this earth to live in Spiritual Harmony with everything on earth and nature. Abuse and destruction of nature is seen as abuse and destruction on oneself. We believe in one original God. God made the world and everything in it. In everything that exists is a spirit, or force, called a Loa. Loas' are in everything, trees, animals, fire, us, everything! Loas' can be used to protect you - and can also cause you harm.
Everyone has their own personal Loa, but may call it something else. Most people realize this without knowing Voodoo. They may refer to it as "sub-concise" or their "guardian angel".
